Ten students were given the chance to attend the young firefighters short programme as part of the GRIT (Gaining Resilience In Teamwork) programme.
The 10 week course, in association with West Yorkshire Fire Service, aims to develop a positive attitude or behaviour in young people with a focus on discipline right from the start. The practical elements to the courses also provide young people with an opportunity to experience activities outside of their usual comfort zone.
The ongoing course is high impact with a focus on the development of practical firefighting skills. The course develops confidence as well as raising awareness of fire and road safety.
So far, the students have been able to experience life as a firefighter and take part in many training drills developing teamwork and leadership throughout. Feedback has been good and students were surprised at the discipline required and the physicality of the job.
