Languages give students the tools to communicate and interact with people and cultures. We strongly believe that each child should have the opportunity to learn a new language whilst at school.
Language learning helps students to develop an open mind and teaches them that they can survive outside their comfort zone. It is a subject that builds real confidence and an ability to overcome challenges. Colleges, universities and employers recognise this and value GCSE qualifications in languages very highly.
Topics covered in year 7, 8 and 9
In Year 7, all students study French before opting for either French or Urdu in Years 8 and 9. In both subjects, students will learn how to talk and write about a range of topics in their target language. These include personal descriptions, family, food and drink, countries and nationalities, weather, school, hobbies, places in the town and holidays. Students will also learn about the different aspects of other cultures, together with key strategies for developing their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.
Topics covered in Years 10 and 11
In years 10 and 11, Edexcel GCSE courses are available in French and Spanish and AQA GCSE in Urdu. In French and Urdu, students will have the opportunity to extend prior learning to a more advanced level, as well as covering additional topics. Spanish is taught as a new from the start of Year 10. Text books with additional interactive resources are linked to all courses. By the end of Year 11, students will be able to offer their views on a range of topics in the target language.
