Students were delighted by the fabulous opportunity to join a presentation from BBC staff when the BBC Bitesize’s Schools Tour made a visit to the Academy. After technicians had set up the hall to resemble a studio, sessions were conducted by host presenter Ross Fiddes who interviewed three celebrity panellists in front of the student audience.
In a recent venture organised by the Academy’s Student Leadership Coordinator Miss Healey, members of our Student Parliament embarked on an informative visit to the Houses of Parliament in London. The primary objective of the trip was to ignite a passion for politics amongst students, discover the benefits of studying at university, encourage them to consider future careers in the field, and deepen their understanding of local political processes.
We recently hosted our annual Careers Fair at the Academy, which proved hugely successful. Representatives from a wide variety of training providers and local colleges attended the event where they were able to offer information about future career opportunities available to our students.
In a special training event led by staff and volunteers from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Service, Academy students were given the opportunity to learn the techniques of performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, more commonly known as CPR.
National Grief Awareness Week takes place across the UK from 2nd to 8th December 2023.
We are thrilled to announce that one of our students has won first place in the Stafflex Christmas Card competition. A massive congratulations to Poppy Ward for creating her successful prize-winning entry.
A group of Academy students have recently taken part in the Inspire Programme. The programme is run by the Police (Kirklees District Early Action Team) and other partner organisations, including the Fire Service, and is designed to engage, inspire and develop young people’s life skills.

In an exciting and enriching opportunity, a group of Year 10 students from the Academy have been participating in a work experience visit at the Alpine Language School in the picturesque town of Morzine, nestled in the French Alps. This exceptional program has allowed the students to develop and practice their language skills while exploring the stunning surroundings and taking part in a wide range of activities.
In preparation for the school holidays, students have been learning about staying safe over summer. They watched an assembly delivered by Miss Holmes, Designated Safeguarding Lead, which covered water safety, online safety, physical and mental health, and financial hardship, amongst other things. On Tuesday, students were able to speak with Preeti from The Base who gave them information on drugs, substances and alcohol. Lots of students visited the Safer Summer stand over lunchtime and took away leaflets and resources.
As the school year draws to a close, we bid a fond farewell to one of Thornhill’s long serving and much-loved members of staff, Lynn Marsden, as she embarks on a well-deserved retirement after many years of dedicated service. To celebrate her long service, we invite contributions from anyone who has known her to share their messages and memories.
