The Academy is pleased to introduce two new clubs for students, both of which start this term. Organised and run by Dr Price is the Classic Book Club and the Debate Club. Each club will meet twice per half term and both are open to students from all year groups.
M R James's classic ghost story, 'Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad' is the chosen text for this half term.
Taking part in the club enables students to expand their reading horizons through short stories and occasionally novels. Through the club students will be introduced to a wide range of texts that will reinforce the learning in the classroom and see them gain an increased knowledge and understanding of literature.
The first meeting takes place on Wednesday 8th November, 2.45pm in E7.
At the Debate Club students will have the opportunity to hone their debate skills and discuss a range of topical issues. The club has appeal to all those who enjoy arguing in a constructive manner to win their case either for or against the motion put forward. Taking part in debates is a good way to develop speaking and listening skills which are essential for those who want to go into law or politics.
At the first meeting the topic to be debated will be 'Should under 18s be allowed to vote?' Students will have chance to decide which topics they would like to cover in future meetings.
The Debate Club’s first meeting will take place on Wednesday 15th November, 2.45pm in E7.
Students who have any questions or would like to find out more about either club should speak to Dr Price.
