In order to raise awareness of the danger of taking drugs a special workshop was held for students at the Academy.
Oliver Gareis, from the BASE, led an intervention programme for students in which he outlined the negative attributes associated with different substances and the long term effects they can have both mentally and physically on the individual.
Oliver highlighted the dangers of both legal and illegal substances which can cause paranoia, kidney failure, heart problems, seizures and lead to death.
The workshop engaged students through various activities and the most popular of these was the ‘beer goggles’ exercise where students had to carry out various tasks wearing special goggles that created the visual effect that someone who had drunk alcohol would experience. This demonstrated the impact of how alcohol impairs normal bodily functions.
The BASE operates across Kirklees and provides advice and support to young people under the age of 21.
