At the academy we support students to develop their reading abilities. ERIC time (everybody reads in class) has helped to encourage students to read for pleasure and all students at KS3 read for 40 minutes each week as part of their timetable. Our library has a range of fiction and non-fiction as well as reading support material which is closely linked to student’s reading ages.
Introductory visits to the library and opportunities to take out and return books is built into English lessons to allow all students to carry a book as part of their standard equipment and to borrow appropriate and engaging texts. These are carefully monitored by our librarian and form tutors.
For students in year 7, 8 and 9 there is an alternative learning pathway to help those who struggle with reading and writing. Specialist teachers deliver reading support sessions and use success maker to allow students to make accelerated progress.
