Year 7 students were treated to a performance of ‘Streetwise’ by a local theatre company, Performance in Education. Its aim was to give them the opportunity to explore risk, responsibility and consequences as a pedestrian. This enables them to make informed decisions, manage their personal safety and understand how their behaviour affects those around them.
Using an innovative set incorporating a multimedia screen the production enabled students to identify and challenge distractions to pedestrian safety such as phones, mp3 players and messing around with friends.
The students certainly found it an eye-opening experience and could identify with several behaviours which can contribute to poor pedestrian safety especially around a school environment.
In a recent survey 51% of all teens say they have been hit or nearly hit by a motor vehicle and admitted that phones and mp3 players were a contributing factor in this.
The Performance in Education theatre company are based at Holmfirth.
