BBC Bitesize's Schools Tour Thrills Academy Students
Students were delighted by the fabulous opportunity to join a presentation from BBC staff when the BBC Bitesize’s Schools Tour made a visit to the Academy. After technicians had set up the hall to resemble a studio, sessions were conducted by host presenter Ross Fiddes who interviewed three celebrity panellists in front of the student audience.
The visiting panellists either come from the local area or work in the local area and discussed their career path with the host. They covered a variety of topics of interest to students, such as relevant qualifications, personal anecdotes, advice on work experience and key soft skills for the workplace.
The esteemed panel of guests included Abigail Jaiyeola, a Senior Reporter and BBC Journalist, alongside Frankie Wolfe, an accomplished Freelance TV Producer, and Mohammed Saloo, a distinguished member of the local group Batley Poets. Each of the professionals shared their personal experience with the students and provided valuable insights of career pathways within the media profession.
Following the interviews of the panellists, conducted by the host, students were able to ask questions of their own during the interactive part of the event. This provided them with the opportunity to discuss, with the panellists, their career route and enquire of them the qualifications that they had studied for at college and university, in order to be successful in their chosen career.
Ross Fiddes concluded the presentation by inviting students to look at the BBC Bitesize website from where they can find a wealth of helpful resources and useful information related to their school studies. He also recommended the Bitesize Careers section where students can take quizzes to help them identify their skills and match their personality to potential career choices.
The event was coordinated by Academy Careers Leader Miss Walker, who told us: “I was so excited when we were offered the opportunity to have BBC Bitesize Schools Tour to visit us and talk to our students about Careers. There was a buzz around the school on the day and the event was enjoyed by staff and students alike.”
Miss Walker went on to say: “Having the BBC join us gave students an insight of opportunities on their doorstep they may not have known existed and it was certainly a real treat learning from the visitors about their own careers, how they got into their chosen career and their journey from school up until this point.”
