Commemorating Remembrance Day 2024

Academy staff and students commemorated Remembrance Day with various special activities to mark the occasion.

At a gathering in the Academy's Peace Garden, History Teacher Mr Caddick led the Act of Remembrance, during which he read out the names of the servicemen who came from Thornhill and lost their lives in World War I and World War II. Mr Young, Year 10 Student Manager, laid a poppy wreath in remembrance of those who had died.

Throughout the week leading up to Remembrance Day, students have been learning about it in their assemblies. These were led by Mr Young, who discussed the meaning of remembrance and spoke about the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings. He also talked about army veterans who have served in recent conflicts in Afghanistan.

Mr Young spoke from first-hand experience as he is a former service personnel. He served in the Royal Signals for almost 10 years. During this time, he served in Afghanistan and carried out various public duties, including providing security at the London Olympics and performing various ceremonial duties. Mr Young has received medals for his service, which he wore to show to students during his presentation. One is for his service in Afghanistan, and a second was awarded for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee (for time served in the forces to mark the late Queen Elizabeth's 60th anniversary year).

Student volunteers have also been selling Poppies to raise money for the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal, and both students and staff alike have been wearing them with pride.
